הַקְהֵל אֶת-הָעָם, הָאֲנָשִׁים וְהַנָּשִׁים וְהַטַּף וְגֵרְך אֲשֶׁר בִּשְׁעָרֶיךָ לְמַעַן יִשְׁמְעוּ וּלְמַעַן יִלְמְדוּ
Assemble the people, the men and the women and the children, and your stranger that is within your gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn. (Devarim 31:12)
In the times of the Bais Hamikdash, a momentous event followed the year of Shmitta – Hakhel – when all Jews assembled in Yerushalayim to hear the king read from the Torah. Torah unified the nation-young, old, learned and unlettered-all could participate.
