The Urban Renewal Center will present its next Community of Learning Forum with Dr. Cassandra Newby-Alexander and Dr. Stephanie Richmond on May 16, 2023, 6:30p, in First Hall at First Presbyterian Church, Norfolk, VA at 820 Colonial Avenue; Norfolk, VA 23507. Cassandra Newby-Alexander and Stephanie Richmond, Professors at Norfolk State University, will discusstheir “Sold Down River” project that focuses on the approximately 20,000 people who were forcibly transported from Norfolk’s harbor to New Orleans during the antebellum period. “Sold Down River” names and tells the stories of enslaved people sold from the region.  The project reveals the significant financial impact of slave trading firms on the economic and social landscape of Hampton Roads and provides tools for scholars, students, and genealogists to trace the stories of individuals, communities, and the region.   Drs. Newby-Alexander and Richmond will focus on how this effort will be an important step toward reparative genealogy by daylighting the history of slavery and connecting students, the public, and scholars to America’s authentic history.
