Description

Join author, historian, and Tampa native Sarah McNamara in conversation with Latinx book influencer Carmen Alvarez of @tomesandtextiles as they explore Sarah's new book, Ybor City: Crucible of the Latina South. Decades before Miami became Havana USA, a wave of leftist, radical, working-class women and men from pre-revolutionary Cuba crossed the Florida Straits, made Ybor City the global capital of the Cuban cigar industry, and established the foundation of latinidad in the sunshine state. The first new book on Ybor City in more than 20 years, McNamara's book tracks the political shifts that defined Ybor City and highlights the underexplored role of women’s leadership within movements for social and economic justice. This free event is hosted and sponsored by Tempus Projects in the Historic Ybor City Kress Building, the evening includes light snacks and beer. Open to the public- all welcome! Tombolo Books will be on-site with books for purchase and signing!
