Description

We’re happy to announce our second WSW Host Grant winner is Joyce Chung, founder and co-owner of Goodies Snack Shop. Check out what we've planned for you. Kimchi Sesh. Discovery. Inspiration. Community. Make your own kimchi and come on a flavor journey at Goodies Snack Shop! You’re invited to a full sensory experience celebrating flavor & discovery. In recognition of AAPI Heritage Month, Joyce will share a little about herself as a Korean American, her entrepreneurial journey and opening Goodies, a first-generation snack shop that focuses on the best new and emerging products in the food & bev space. Goodies showcases independent brands while centering AAPI founded goods. Enjoy a selection of snacks and refreshments specifically curated to highlight key flavors and encourage discovery through the senses. Joyce has chosen Sophia Sanchez, co-owner of Matta, a Vietnamese American food truck, to provide food for all attendees. Lunch will be a choose your own adventure style rice bowl bar – set up with toppings, sauces and your choice of protein (vegan option as well). Sophia is also sharing her specialty pandan donuts, which are Vietnamese influenced by her partner, but remixed with her own flavors from Sophia’s El Salvadoran heritage. Plus, for refreshments we’ll have our favorite non-alcoholic bevies pulled right from Goodies cold case. While you're sipping, snacking, and dreaming with other local business owners attending the meet up, your eyes will be drawn towards all the lush greenery in the space filled with natural light. Joyce will walk us all through quick and easy steps to make her version of BAECHU KIMCHI (Napa Cabbage Kimchi). Then we’ll all take turns gathering around the tables for our own kimchi sesh, packing in jars we can take home and later enjoy. This is a $75 unique experience being gifted to the WSW founder community* for $25 a ticket. A portion of the cost has been subsidized by ALIST and paid for in part by our sponsor OnPoint Credit Union and donors of our WSW Community goFundme campaign. *Limit 1 ticket per customer. Space is limited. Ticket sales are nonrefundable. This invitation is for women identifying business owners only. Thank you for your understanding. Parking details for attendees: Street parking is available, but limited because they are downtown. Please plan to carpool if possible. *************************** BACKGROUND The intent of these meetups are to connect true business owners together so they can strengthen their relationships with others struggling through entrepreneurship. Business ownership isn’t for everyone and the folx attending are a certain subset of our community. Of course we are also treating them to an afternoon and much needed break, but the conversations center mostly around navigating this journey and knowledge sharing with other women. We don’t want to exclude folx looking for connection, but at the same time we want to hold onto the integrity of what this is. It truly is a rare and important space. If you feel this is you, you are welcome. If you don’t, I invite you to make a donation to the WSW Community Fund goFundme campaign to show your support. May WSW's Meet Up Host is Joyce Chung (she/her). Joyce identifies as a Korean American woman and is the founder and co-owner of Goodies Snack Shop. After moving from Los Angeles to Portland in 2021, she and her partner Terence opened their shop doors in Oldtown Chinatown in September 2022. Joyce began her CPG (consumer packaged goods) career in 2012 as a marketer in the food & bev start up space and quickly fell in love with the passionate community of innovators. She spent most of her career building brands, partnerships, teams, and experiences. In 2018, she left her job to pursue her own entrepreneurial journey. Joyce worked on and developed Memo, a low alcohol soju based beverage. When the pandemic hit, she grew a micro nursery out of her studio apt and shipped seed grown plants while we were all locked indoors. Fueled by the need for connection and purpose, she and Terrance began imagining and building a space for the community incorporating all the things they love. Goodies was born. May's WSW Meet Up caterer and collaborator is Sophia Sanchez (she/her). Sophia identifies as a Salvadoran American woman. She and her partner Richard Le co-own and operate Matta, a Vietnamese American Food Truck. After a trip to Vietnam to visit Richard's family, they decided to open Matta in 2018. Since then they have moved their business around Portland, but are now located in the food cart pod at Concourse Coffee. They were voted best new food cart in 2019 by the Oregonian and have been covered in just about every news outlet in the PNW. Through Matta, Richard’s upbringing in the US as a first generation Vietnamese American in San Jose, California shines through in the food. The magic of Sophia’s Salvadoran heritage combined with Richard’s Viet influences is what invented the pandan donut. Since adding to the menu they’ve sold over 10k donuts and Sophia can’t wait to share it with the WSW community. Menu offered: Rice bowls (Vegan option available)
