Description
Attending community college and transferring to a four-year university can potentially be a pathway to upward mobility for low-income and first-generation students. But while about 80% of these students want to transfer, only about 20% do. Higher education researcher April Chen will share her experience, what the research shows and offer some solutions to help strengthen the educational and economic pipeline. About the SpeakerDr. April Chen is an assistant professor in the LSU Lutrill & Pearl Payne School of Education. She received her doctoral degree in Educational Leadership specializing in Higher Education with a minor in Statistics from Iowa State University in 2014. She applies both advanced statistical and qualitative methods to study community college transfer students, STEM success among underrepresented student populations and the experiences of international students. Her work has been published in top-tier higher education journals and she has delivered more than 40 scholarly presentations at premier national research conferences. She received the LSU Alumni Association Rising Faculty Research Award in 2020 and this year’s LSU Rainmaker Award for her outstanding records of scholarship and published research.
