Description

They say don’t judge a book by its cover, but I think we already know the juice inside these bottles will be at least as elegant as the bottles themselves. We will be hosting a tasting Thursday, May 5th of three of these iconic pinot noirs with a fun twist. The twist: raffling off a magnum of Belle Glos Clark and Telephone, a $130 bottle! Tickets for the tasting will the $20, $15 for wine club members. Raffle tickets for the magnum will be $15 (do not have to attend tasting to buy raffle ticket, we know weeknight tastings are often hard to get to). We will have special pricing for the bottles the night of the tasting. All three will be marked $33/ea. After night of tasting these bottles will go on the shelf at $48-55. Bella Glos showcases distinctive Pinot Noirs produced from California’s most noteworthy coastal wine-growing regions. As a fifth-generation Napa Valley winemaker, Joe Wagner learned his way around a vineyard long before he was able to drink wine. By the time he was 19 he knew that he would continue his family’s winemaking legacy, working alongside his father at Caymus Vineyards. In 2001, he created Belle Glos, with a focus on vineyard-designated Pinot Noirs from throughout California’s best coastal regions. The wines:- Belle Glos Clark and Telephone o SantaMaria Valley o The Clark & Telephone Vineyard was established in 1972 and planted with “own root” Martini clone vines. Located just 13 miles from the ocean and situated on a west-facing slope, this vineyard experiences weather patterns that pull from west to east to bring cool fog and coastal breezes inland until August when Santa Ana winds begin. o Harvested early in the morning so the fruit would arrive at the winery while the grapes were still cool to preserve their vineyard-fresh flavors. After destemming (but not crushing) the berries, we cold-soaked the must for 14 days to soften the skins and allow for ideal extraction. During fermentation in a combination of closed and open-top stainless-steel fermenters, we used both punch-down and pump-over techniques to extract color and phenolics. We aged the wine in 100% French oak (60% new) for up to 12 months. After the wine underwent malolactic fermentation, we racked it twice before bottling. o Tasting notes: Deep purple with flecks of garnet in color with lavish aromas of warm blackberry pie, raspberry, licorice, and white pepper. Bold and sophisticated on the palate with flavors of dry cherry, crushed lavender, and chocolate covered blueberries. The texture is rich and velvety which leads to a long, structured finish. - Belle Glos Las Alturas o Santa Lucia Highlands o The Spanish term “Las Alturas” means “the heights,” a fitting name for this vineyard located on one of the highest grape-growing benches in the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA up to 1,200 feet. At this elevation, the sunny but very cool climate creates a wine bearing all the hallmarks of this coastal region: robust, expressive, full-bodied, and balanced by a firm acidity. o We harvested early in the morning so the fruit would arrive at the winery while the grapes were still cool to preserve the vineyard-fresh flavors. After destemming (but not crushing) the berries, we cold-soaked the fruit for up to two weeks to soften the skins and allow for ideal extraction. During fermentation in a combination of closed and open-top stainless-steel fermenters, we used both punch-downs and pump-overs to extract color and tannins, and to control temperatures and maximize flavors. We aged the wine in 100% French oak (60% new) for up to nine months. After the wine underwent malolactic fermentation, we racked it twice before making the final blend. o Tasting notes: Ruby red in color with fragrant aromas of blueberry pie, dried fig, kola nut and hints of coffee grounds. Dark berry fruit on the palate with flavors of blackberry pie, black cherry, creamy milk chocolate and subtle notes of nutmeg. Rich and structured, this wine has beautiful acidity that lingers through to a long, mouthwatering finish. - Belle Glos Dairyman o Russian River Valley o Once a dairy farm and pastureland, this vineyard has realized its greatest potential as a prime, virgin Pinot Noir vineyard. It was first planted in 2000 to a mix of Dijon clones 115, 667, and 777, all grafted on low-vigor rootstock 101-14. o We harvested early in the morning so the fruit would arrive at the winery while the grapes were still cool to preserve the vineyard-fresh flavors. Bold and rich tones layered with flavors of fresh strawberry cobbler and bramble accompanied by notes of cinnamon and nutmeg. This wine has rich tannins, nice concentration, depth, and natural acidity that expresses the authenticity of a Sonoma County Pinot Noir.
