Press release from the City of Iowa City:
January 11, 2021
Iowa City's new Police Chief Dustin Liston was sworn-in on the morning of Monday, Jan. 11, 2021, at City Hall.
The small, socially distanced swearing-in happened with just a few City staff members in Emma Harvat Hall due to COVID-19 precautions. The ceremony was conducted by City Clerk Kellie Fruehling.
Bringing more than two decades of law enforcement experience to Iowa City, Liston served on the El Paso Police Department in El Paso, Texas, since 1998. In 2014, Liston was promoted to police lieutenant. In 2019, he became the director of the El Paso Fusion Center, a regional, multi-agency intelligence hub with a mission to protect citizens and infrastructure of Far West Texas and Southern New Mexico.
Liston, who was raised in Eldora, holds both a Masters of Science in Criminal Justice from Sul Ross State University, and a Bachelors degree from the University of Iowa.
City Manager Geoff Fruin recommended Liston to the Iowa City City Council following an extensive search process that included recruitment, interviews, and public input. The Iowa City City Council unanimously approved his appointment in October 2020. Liston replaces former Iowa City Police Chief Jody Matherly, who retired in February 2020.
