Description

This workshop will introduce you to some basic hand-sewing techniques to combat fast fashion and repair textiles. Sarah will present techniques for patching rips, holes, and worn areas as well as sashiko-style running stitches so you can mend your own textiles. We will be focusing on patching fabric from the inside or outside of the garment and adding reinforcement with hand-stitches. The class is designed for all skill levels of hand-sewers. After she presents techniques and samples, you’ll have ample time to work on your own project, and you’ll have a chance to ask Sarah questions throughout the session. Please bring an item or two that needs some repair. If you don't have something you want to work on, She'll provide some practice fabric for you to learn the techniques.MATERIALS PROVIDED: We'll provide scraps of fabric to use as patches, a variety of embroidery floss & sashiko thread for mending fabrics, sewing needles, how-to mending zines, and your very own mending kit to take home. Other shared materials include: scissors & snips, scrap fabric to practice stitches, and books for inspiration.MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR: Sara Mahowald (she/her) is a self-proclaimed Duchess of Dabble, having spent most of her life learning a myriad of skills. She learned how to sew as a child, and the love of learning new crafts with her hands has never left - she knits, crochets, cooks, bakes, lino-carves, punch-needles - the list goes on. Throughout life she’s considered the impact humans have had on our environment, and mending garments is one of the steps she likes to take to decrease her waste and to combat fast-fashion.🥨 Snacks and Beverages available for purchase, but you can always BYOB!📍More Info on getting to the Maker Space and parking can be found here
