Description

The Indonesian Culture Night (ICN) is an entirely student-run production that celebrates Indonesian culture and identity through various visual and performing arts such as music, dance, and theatre. We are incorporating elements of the Indonesian and Indonesian-American experiences in the plot and dance. Follow our main protagonist, Ceci, as she navigates her queer identity while searching for the meaning of community. We will be investigating the intersectionality of racism directed towards Indonesian Americans, prejudice against women, homophobia outside and within the family space, and familial relations along with intergenerational trauma. The Indonesian-American identity is relatively new in the United States, so we hope to make ourselves more known and understood by telling our own stories at UCLA. Additionally, the Indonesian American community is fairly small, and we hope to use this opportunity to bond through our shared experiences as immigrants. Our stories are often avoided due to their traumatic nature both by family and by mass media. Thus it is that much more important to provide a space to explore our intergenerational trauma. This event is open to everyone! Please join us this year at Ackerman Grand Ballroom! We will be hosting a special reception at 6:30 PM with free food and drinks with traditional Balinese music and an artifacts showcase! The show will start at 7 PM. It takes a village to raise a child and we want to keep this event free for our audience. However, if you would like to donate and continue to support events like these for the Association of Indonesian Americans, please consider providing a suggested donation of $5 to our Spark Campaign! You can find more information on how to donate at www.spark.ucla.edu/icn2023 Whether you donate or not, we hope to see you there!
