Description

As a member of Central Chapter, you are invited to a hike at DePauw Nature Park in Greencastle on June 3rd at 11am. We will take a 1.5 mile easy/moderate hike that will include riparian and upland forest as well as views of the quarry pond.  (There is one very short but steep hill to climb to get to the upland forest.) There are no stairs or crossing water, just a few short hills. From 1917-1977, the Nature Park was the site of a limestone quarry, owned and operated by Hanson Aggregates.  Limestone rock in the quarry began forming approximately 350 million years ago from the remains of animals living on the bottom of an inland sea that covered this area.  The layers of remains are the basis of the rock layers observed in the quarry walls. The hike will be led by Jim Benedix, a field biologist at DePauw University, whose interests span the interfaces of ecology, evolution and behavior. In addition to being a professor in the Biology Department, Jim serves as the Biological Coordinator of the 520 acre DePauw University Nature Park.  Restrooms are available. Meet at the parking lot at the main entrance road off of West Walnut Street in Greencastle. 1400 W County Road 125 S, Greencastle, IN 46135. Hike is for members only and limited to 25.
