LAKEWOOD, CO — Police shot and killed a man Tuesday afternoon in Lakewood, officials said.
Officers were called around noon to a vehicle dealership near West Colfax Avenue and Garrison Street after they received a report that a man was trying to break into vehicles on the lot.
After the officers were unable to find the man, another call came in about a nearby robbery at a Safeway, officials said.
"Agents investigated and found no indication that a robbery had occurred," Lakewood police said in a community alert.
The officers then saw the suspect — who was described in their first call — at West Colfax and Glen Moor Drive. They went after the man, and he pointed his gun at officers before they shot him, according to the Lakewood Police Department.
The man was pronounced dead soon after, police said.

The Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team will investigate the shooting, officials said.
