Description

Birding at Wapato Lake, Tacoma WA 9:00am Sunday April 30th, 2023 Parking/travel: Parking at 72nd entrance is closest to the paved sidewalk to the loop and where we will be meeting. There is additional parking on the eastern side of the park. There are multiple bus stops around the exterior of the park. Buses 48, 55, and 202 stop around the park. The stops on 72nd street are closest to the entrance and meeting point. Trip leaders: Alyssa, Kelsey, and Petey. What to expect: Time for spring migration! Wapato Park is home and a stopover for many birds. There are many different types of habitat in the little park and we will be seeing the birdies that frequent them like waterfowl, swifts, passerines, raptors, and herons. Hopefully migrants like the Western Tanager, Rufous Hummingbird, and a variety of warblers will show up for us! We will be traveling at a slow pace around the approximately 0.9 miles of paved loop. If you are running late, we will provide contact information in the reminder email to catch up. What to bring: Bring binoculars if you have them, water, snacks, and dress for the weather. We have binoculars to borrow for those who don’t have them. Accessibility: Wapato Park is one of the most accessible parks in Tacoma for birding and a park we plan on coming back to often. The entirety of the loop from the 72nd parking lot entrance to the loop is fully paved. We have recently uploaded a birdability checklist for this location with up to date accessibility related information. Click here to access that entry. Please reach out to us if you have any questions. Inclement weather considerations: Rain or shine Land acknowledgement: We recognize and appreciate that this park lies on land that has been stewarded by generations of the Steilacoom, Puyallup, Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla People. Check here for a useful map of native lands, but keep in mind that trying to understand Indigenous Nations through the lens of Western colonialist land ownership can be futile.
