Volunteers clean and manage the grounds of the Smith-McDowell House— a Civil War Trails stop—on Park Day.
The Western North Carolina Historical Association and the American Battlefield Trust are teaming up again for 2021 Park Day on the grounds of Smith-McDowell House. Unlike previous years, this will be an outdoor only event. We will comply with the Covid 19 protocols of the American Battlefield Trust as well as all local restrictions. (Wear a face mask, keep a distance of 6 feet, and wash hands frequently.)
The day's activities begin with sign-in at 10 am on the patio at the rear entrance to Smith-McDowell House. Volunteers will rake leaves, pick up debris, spread mulch , weed gardens, clear dead shrubs and trees, and plant new ones (if available). In other words, yard work. We are committed to maintaining the Olmsted landscape restored for us by the Men's Garden Club of Asheville. We are grateful for their participation.
In accordance with safety guidelines, we will not share tools. We have tools available, which we will disinfect, but feel free to bring your own. Please label them. Hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes will be available for your use. Bottled water is available throughout the day. The House is open only for bathroom use only.
We are proud that we can again provide food for our volunteers, but with safety in mind, we will sit at a distance to eat individually bagged lunches. We are grateful to volunteer Cliff Whitfield for preparing the meals. You can help Cliff plan the menu when you register by letting us know if you have any dietary restrictions. This year we will add an educational component to Park Day with a lunchtime speaker.
The American Battlefield Trust will thank volunteers with souvenir water bottles and copies of their magazine Hallowed Ground.
