Description

Join us for a morning to honor our madre tierra and motHERHOOD! What better way than to meet at the birthplace of Tucson - at the base of "A" Mountain! The hike up Sentinel Peak can be explored by all ages, skill levels but it is a bit rocky. The views of Tucson and the surrounding mountains are great, spanning in all directions. This route has no shade and the temperatures in Tucson can soar during this time of year. Let's make sure to arrive on time. While dogs are allowed on this trail on leash, we recommend either leaving them at home or putting boots on them due to the broken glass commonly found on this trail. Unfortunately, the mountain occasionally attracts partiers who don’t clean up after themselves. Watch your step. From the trailhead, head up S Sentinel Peak Road to where it splits. Stay right to wrap around the southern face of the mountain, which has a view of the Santa Cruz River and South Tucson. This is close to a 2 mile out and back trail and will take about an hour and 20 minutes to complete (depending how many breaks and selfies we want to take). This guided hike is FREE to attend and open to all experience levels! Please bring your own water bottle, light snacks, comfortable hiking shoes, wear sunscreen and come prepared to re-embrace our Tucson roots! This hike will provide an opportunity to pause, slow down the mind and spirit, and create an open space for rest with Barrio Yoga (Patricia Sanchez)tools to engage more with nature as an intentional place to practice self care take time to be a healthier you with Shotz de Salud (Jacqueline Jacquie Vega Gallegos)access to local parks and natural areas for future adventures!Location + Parking: Meet and park in the lot that is at the base of the quarry, which is off of Grande. There is plenty of parking in the empty lot or across the street in the neighborhood- 244 S Grande Ave. Tucson, AZ 85745 Brief History of Sentinel Peak: Sentinel Peak, also known as “A” Mountain, is a prominent landmark, hiking trail, park and sunset-watching destination in the Tucson Mountains on the west side of Downtown Tucson. Every day, hundreds of people walk, bike and drive on Sentinel Peak Road, which climbs and encircles Sentinel Peak Park. The 2,897-foot mountain is made up of several layers of igneous rock representing various types of volcanic activity, though the mountain itself is not a volcano. Sentinel Peak and the surrounding Santa Cruz Valley have a rich archaeological history dating back over 4,000 years. The area’s first inhabitants grew crops at the mountain's base along the Santa Cruz River, which is known as Tucson’s birthplace. Sentinel Peak was used as a lookout and for signal fires by native Americans prior to and since 1692 and later by early settlers as well as soldiers during the Civil War. The "A" was built by University of Arizona (UA) students in 1916. Every year, UA students and alumni kick off Homecoming festivities with a ceremonial lighting of the “A” on the mountain.
