Oysters live along brackish coastal shorelines, growing in a mixture of fresh and salt water. Any disruption to these water conditions threatens the health of oyster populations, the ecology of regional habitats and the economy of surrounding communities. “The Humble Oyster” examines the fragility of Northwest Florida’s threatened coastal ecology and efforts to bring back the health of local bays and a once vibrant commercial industry—since impacted by water quality, hurricanes and overharvesting—through oyster restoration. The film also documents oyster farmer Shana Alford’s challenging first year and oysterman Pasco Gibson’s memories of bountiful natural reefs that no longer exist in the waterways in and around Santa Rosa County.
