After 33 years in Silver Spring, Maryland, Liz and her husband David and youngest daughter Shoshana made Aliya to Israel in 2017. She and David were exceptionally loving and supportive partners and exemplary parents, especially in caring for Shoshi’s special needs with grace and fierce determination. In Maryland, Liz was especially happy to live only a few blocks away from her sister Sally; they raised their families together. In Modi’in, Liz was especially happy to live only a few blocks away from her daughter Zahava and her family, while maintaining close bonds and daily contact with her daughter Naomi and her family in Chicago. Liz’s entire career was devoted to the caring professions, with music as her main medium. Receiving a gift of a guitar and a few lessons from her brother Gene at age 13, she became an accomplished musician, inspirational teacher, therapist, and performer. Liz began as a special education teacher, first in Charlottesville, Virginia (where she met David), and after six years in the classroom switched careers to develop her own form of music therapy for seniors. Moving to the DC area she started working at the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington and soon became their resident musician for over 30 years. Liz performed at numerous senior-living facilities and recorded an album based on her years of inspired work, “Shabbat Shalom from the Hebrew Home”, which is listed on Spotify. After moving to Israel, she reinvented herself again with an emphasis on music therapy for individuals aging in place, especially those with dementia. Liz also was very active in the greater Washington DC Jewish community as a performer (often with sister Sally) and educator. She was a music teacher and song leader at several local synagogues and Camp JCC and founded numerous music programs at local Hebrew day schools, including choirs and bands. Several of Liz’s former students attribute to her their choice of careers as professional musicians. From her cancer bed, Liz exhorted her family in a song she composed to “Never give up, never give up, keep taking steps and never give up.” She will be remembered with the deepest affection for her unfailing love and devotion to her family, her care and kindness for everyone around her, her iron-willed determination, and the grace with which she faced her cancer. Liz leaves behind a rich legacy of living life with a positive, optimistic, and courageous spirit. Her life was a song with joy in her heart.
