Description

The SSO's closing concert features two pieces that we’re incredibly excited about. The first half includes John Williams’ quintessential Star Wars Suite, a collection of instantly-recognizable cues from A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back in their original, film-accurate scoring. The first tutti chord of the main title was a lightning strike, heralding a transformation of American popular culture that can still be felt in the box office hegemony of popcorn sci-fi like the Marvel and DC cinematic universes. We hope you’ll come celebrate this iconic piece of 20th century pop culture with the Shasta Symphony. The second half of the concert will be a celebration of the career of Dr. Liz Waterbury. An icon of the local music scene, nearing the end of her career at Shasta College, Dr. Waterbury will take up her baton once again to conduct an absolute classic of the choral-symphonic canon, Mozart’s Krönungsmesse, the piece which accompanied the coronation of Francis II as Holy Roman Emperor in 1792. The community chorale and select members of the Shasta Symphony will join Dr. Waterbury to place this metaphorical crown on her career here at the northernmost end of California. We hope to see you there!
