She takes us from the opulent court of Louis XIV to the labor camps in modern-day Chinese-occupied Xinjiang. We see how textiles were once dyed with lichen, shells, bark, saffron, and beetles, displaying distinctive regional weaves and knits, and how the modern Western garment industry has refashioned our attire into the homogenous and disposable uniforms popularized by fast-fashion brands. www.penguinrandomhouse.com Cloth + Home is a fashion and decor boutique that aims to elevate and showcase ethically produced, small batch, and one-of-a-kind pieces while gathering a community of friends and makers to share their stories. The Rana Plaza building housed a number of garment factories, employing around 5,000 people. The people in this building were manufacturing clothing for many of the biggest global fashion brands. The building collapsed and killed 1,134 people and injured more than 2,500 others, making it the fourth largest industrial disaster in history. The victims were mostly young women. During Fashion Revolution Week, we remember the lives lost and demand that no one should die for fashion. www.fashionrevolution.org Dominican University is a highly respected university offering over 50 undergraduate degree options, 20 graduate degrees, and research opportunities.
