Join KERA, Dallas Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation, and our community partners for a free public workshop and learn the fundamentals of family history research. The workshop will be held Saturday, April 29, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., at the Tarrant County College Trinity River Campus, Connection Bay Room, 444 N. Henderson St., Fort Worth, TX 76102. McCarty, a native Texan, is a professional genealogist and researcher, who has traced his family’s history back to the 1700’s. His passion for genealogy was sparked at a young age when he read the Comprehensive Names Index for the American Slave and began tracing his family roots. Since then he has become a nationally recognized expert on African American history and genealogy, speaking at universities, museums, libraries, and leading genealogy workshops as well as being featured in numerous articles. • Dr. Peter Martínez is a Professor of History at Tarrant County College specializing in Chicano history. Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, he earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Texas at Arlington and his Doctorate from the University of North Texas. His dissertation, “Ready to Run: Fort Worth’s Mexicans in Search of Representation, 1960-2000,” was awarded Best Dissertation in Tejano/a Studies by the National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies – Tejas Foco. Dr. Martinez is also a founding member and current Vice President of HOLA(Historians of Latino Americans) Tarrant County. • Susana Guerra Privett is a Data Dissemination Specialist with the U.S. Census Bureau. Susana gives presentations and conducts workshops about Census Bureau data, various surveys and census.gov. A member of HOGAR (Hispanic Organization for Genealogy and Research) de Dallas, she spends her downtime working on her family history and blogging about her experiences.
