The 2023 Levitt AMP Ocala Music Series presents The Harlem Gospel Travelers with opening group RoomsLiving on Friday, May 5 from 7 – 9 p.m. at Webb Field at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Complex. The performance is free. Please bring your chairs and blankets. Food is available from Kentons Chance, Frank’s Footers, and Kona Ice Ocala. Fun field games and activities with the Ocala Recreation and Parks recreation vehicle. Each concert in the series features a local non-profit organization working to create art accessibility in our community; tonight’s featured non-profit is Discovery Center. HEADLINING ARTIST: The Harlem Gospel Travelers Born out of a non-profit music education program led by Eli Paperboy Reed, The Harlem Gospel Travelers has three members: Thomas Gatling, George Marage, and Dennis Bailey. This trio draws deeply on the gospel quartet tradition of the 1950’s and ‘60’s with a distinctly modern edge. They are bold and resilient, facing down doubt and despair with faith and perseverance. Their performances are explosive and ecstatic, fueled by dazzling vocal arrangements punctuated with gritty bursts of guitar and crunchy rhythm breaks. The young men of The Harlem Gospel Travelers aren’t just reviving sounds from the past, they’re revitalizing them for the present and reminding us just how relevant this music is (and always has been) in times of hardship and uncertainty.
