The first-annual Trashion Revolution fashion show is a community activation event to create awareness, offer solutions and inspire change. 40 designers are creating "trash art" looks made primarily from single-use, disposable, post-consumer plastic. Plastic pollution is driving climate change, it's committing chronic chemical violence against primarily low-income and BIPOC communities, it is a disaster for wildlife, and it is a human health crisis: 97% of Americans have PFAS in their blood, and microplastics have been found in human lung tissue, placentas and breast milk. Single-use plastic is incredibly convenient, but it is designed to be used for mere seconds or minutes - and then it remains on our planet for hundreds or even thousands of years, polluting our environment, sitting in landfills, turning our lakes and oceans into landfills or essentially being burned through "advanced recycling" technologies like "chemical recycling" that further drive pollution and create toxins in our world. This system is actually insane, but at one point in time smoking on airplanes, performing partial lobotomies to treat depression, feeding your infant Coca-Cola laced with amphetamines and owning people used to all be perfectly reasonable activities as well. Now, in retrospect, it is mind-boggling how things used to be, even quite recently, but future societies will look back on this era of single-use plastic and fossil fuel burning and be astonished at our wastefulness. The fossil fuel, plastics and chemical industries have normalized single-use plastic in every facet of our existence because it's cheap, it's extremely profitable, and it's convenient. But we are paying, and like the proverbial frog who doesn't realize the water it's sitting in is slowly increasing in temperature until it boils to death, we are the humans alive in the middle of this crisis who can either do nothing, or do something for ourselves and future generations. The choice is ours: Trashion Revolution is about expanding minds, opening hearts, and inspiring people to make the choice to act and be part of the solutions. 50 models will walk the runway who represent the diversity of humanity: plastic pollution and climate change affect all life on this planet, so it is critical that humanity be represented at our show as well as welcome at our show. Our models represent age diversity, body diversity, racial diversity and gender diversity, from people who will walk the runway for the very first time to professional models. Addressing plastic pollution and climate change is a monumental undertaking, and humanity must work together to create a world that can support our existence. And not just human existence, but all of existence - the rich biodiversity within the biome of our tiny blue planet that humans rely upon. We are not separate from "nature": we are nature. Trashion Revolution aims to be an event that can make taking action towards a healthier future for our planet less insurmountable and scary. To face the reality that we are in the midst of the "6th Mass Extinction" can feel terrifying and heartbreaking - but there are solutions, and we can turn many things around right now if we have the courage, the will and the hope.
