My son gave me permission a few years ago to share his and my mental health journey with the world but I wasn't ready for several reasons; however, the time has come to share our journey so that we can continue to heal and help others navigate and embrace a space that is all so often filled with shame and loneliness. The evening will consist of storytelling, reflections, simulations, and experiences. The journey will highlight and capture the gaps, barriers, highs, lows, and darkness of a mental health journey for a black family across multiple institutions. At the end of the storytelling there will be a panel discussion that consists of professionals and individuals with lived experiences talking about their journey as well. The event is intended to raise awareness while giving each attendee the gift of hope. Proceeds from the event benefit Changing Lives by Supporting Dreams Fund at The Indianapolis Foundation. I created this fund in the hope that it would provide hope and respite for community members navigating life's challenges. The fund will provide direct support to individuals and families by addressing hardships and mental health gaps so that they realize that their dreams are possible and limitless.
