JOIN THE EVENT ON ZOOM - Registration is not required but appreciated Event Title: "WITH US, FOR US: Practicing Solidarity in Our Movements" Date: May 11, 2023 Time: 12:20 p.m. - 1:30 p.m Location: Fireside Hall, Contra Costa College, 2600 Mission Bell Drive, San Pablo CA 94806. How can Asian Americans fight for racial justice? Join us for a candid conversation with Kim Tran, an author, activist, and consultant who works for social change at the intersection of race and queerness. Learn how to build solidarity with Latinx, Indigenous and Black communities, unlearn toxic stereotypes and create equitable systems. Engage in a safe and supportive learning community where you can ask messy questions about race, gender and activism. This talk is inspired by the powerful action of thirty activists who chained their hands and locked their bodies to the Oakland Federal Building on January 16th, 2015, to protest police brutality against Black Americans. They stood silently for four hours and twenty-eight minutes, the time that Michael Brown's body was left on the street after he was killed by police in Ferguson. Their action marked the birth of Asians4BlackLives, a continuation of decades of Asian American activism. The talk will begin with an introduction and discussion of the following topics: - What are the Oppression Olympics and how do they harm racial justice? - What are the greatest challenges to building allyship and solidarity? - How can we unlearn the toxic stereotypes held in our communities and families? - Where and how do we begin building relationships and systems that lead to equity and justice? The talk will also provide equal and ample time and space for participants to share their thoughts and questions. Don't miss this opportunity to learn from a leading voice in Asian American activism and connect with others who care about racial justice. Register now!
