In this 2-hour workshop, we will learn about the "wabi-sabi" philosophy and put it into practice by making 4 coasters out of organic, naturally-dyed fabrics. The focus will be on slow, intentional stitching, while letting go of perfectionism and expectation.
This workshop is suitable for all levels, regardless of sewing experience. Some manual dexterity will be required.
In the wabi-sabi tradition, "greatness" exists in the inconspicuous and overlooked details of our material surroundings. For this workshop, we will embrace the wabi-sabi principles of irregularity, intimacy, and simplicity.
You will leave with 4 hand-quilted fabric coasters (or the materials to complete them at home), along with ideas for how to further age, distress, or dye the coasters to increase their unpretentious and earthy look.
All materials will be provided, along with light snacks and tea. Workshop will be held in a private art studio at Riverview Station, conveniently located in Asheville's River Arts District.
Instructor Jason Pierson is an experienced quilter, sewist, and natural dyer. His work focuses on sustainability and on decreasing our footprint on the planet, especially in art/creative practice.
