Description

This program addresses floatable trash, one of the three major water quality issues on the Bronx River. Volunteers participate in real science, through hands-on experiences. The information we will collect helps find the sources and stops trash from entering the river in the first place. The project engages volunteers by promoting outreach to local businesses whose products end up in and along the river, especially uniting messaging around the harm to our waterways caused by non-biodegradable products. Volunteers will be on land and also wear waders in the river & help us count the bottles, cans, straws, & more we find in the trash boom and on the pathway nearby. This day's project is one of the many locations taking place to celebrate the 12th annual Riverkeeper Sweep ! We will meet at the Westchester County Center Parking Lot East & walk the path to the project site together. Work site is 1/2 mile from meeting location so please arrive early or on time so you can travel with us to the work site. No one will be at the meeting site past 10:30 am. Waders & gloves will be provided but please bring your own water. Volunteers should wear clothes that can get dirty and socks and closed toe shoes. Volunteers 12 and under require a parent or chaperone. Volunteers under 14 will participate in the land cleanup only. Depending on the number of volunteers, some volunteers may be assigned to the pathway cleanup. Registered volunteers will receive an email with location details and an insurance waiver 1 day before the event.
