On May 19th, 2023 Kentucky Health Justice Network (KHJN) will host the first annual FAT Gala. This is an 18 and over event. "FAT" is short for "Fund-A-Thon," a nation-wide abortion fundraising push hosted by the National Network of Abortion Funds (NNAF). KHJN is the only fund of its kind in the country that not only supports abortion access but also trans care. Our goal for this Fund-A-Thon is to raise $50,000. Our hope is that the FAT Gala will help us raise $5,000 toward that goal. To learn more about this fundraiser or see what we have raised so far click HERE. As you may know, the commonwealth just suffered the most egregious legislative session that we, as an organization, have seen thus far. Kentucky lawmakers have voted en masse to strip Kentuckians of their basic human rights and dignity. SB150, the most oppressive anti-trans legislation to ever be passed in the United States, struck many of our staff to the core. They have come for our kids. As a direct services org, we have very little power and influence in Frankfort, but we do have the ability to ensure that every Kentuckian in need of gender-affirming care or abortions is able to maintain access to that life-saving care. The average cost of providing those services has risen more than 50% per person served since the overturn of Roe. As a result of this legislative session is only getting more costly. We expect trans youth expenses to rise just as much. We have taken time to recover as best we can from the final week of the 2023 legislative session and gotten right back up to continue putting in the work planning what we hope to be the first of many annual FAT Galas. The night will include DJs, dancing, small bites, a silent auction, a cash bar, a few impassioned speeches, drag performances and most of all, community. Attire for the evening is whatever brings you joy. Prom dresses, tiaras, trousers, fairy wings, and bow ties are all appropriate for the evenings event. The campier the better!
