Historic Beechwood CemeterySaturday and Sunday, April 22 and 23 from 2:00pm to 4:00pmPreservation Durham proudly presents its second Beechwood Cemetery tour! Join us as we walk through Beechwood's gates and explore the road from slavery to opportunity, Black Durham's community relations and familial ties, as well as the rich legacy of leadership and fortitude. Guests must order tickets in advance at a cost of $20/person ($24.22 incl fees + taxes). After two decades of advocacy by Durham's African-American leadership, a city cemetery for its African-American citizens was established in the late 1920s. That cemetery is Beechwood, where trailblazers in business and education, champions of civil rights, leaders in politics, the arts, and the church are memorialized. These are the people who, in the words of W. E. B. DuBois, "upbuilt" Durham, and we are excited for our tour guides to share their stories. Please be on time and look for the Preservation Durham banner at the corner of Cornwallis Road and Fayetteville Street. Our guides will share inspiring stories of life, love, triumph, and occasional tragedy that reflect the history of Durham. Wear sensible shoes and comfortable clothing as there are no public bathrooms on site.
