More details about what Civic Sessions are and why we are doing them through Main Street Eureka Springs: What is Civic Session? The Sessions are built to be a purposeful gathering that rebuilds faith in one another and our democracy. This second Civic Session is a celebration of the role kindness plays in our civic lives. We will have Mojo's Records back to do a little record spinning, have the opportunity partiicpate in a random act of kindness activity of your choice and hosted by the Main Street Eureka Springs team and enjoy the offered pies together in community. Will there be other Civic Sessions? Yes, Main Street Eureka Springs will host four sessions in 2023 focusing on a different aspect and theme of civic life for the community to reflect on. We believe it is vital to build communal spaces for people to rededicate themselves to being powerful, responsible citizens. Are Civic Sessions religious? No. Civic Sessions are the civic analogue to faith gatherings. They’re a ritual designed for reflection, reckoning, and recommitment to civic life. Are Civic Sessions political? No. They are a space to reflect on — and rebuild — our faith in democracy. It’s a place for connecting around the values and practices of being an active citizen, reckoning with our nation’s creed, and building new civic traditions which are joyful and communal. Civic Sessions are focused on the issues, concerns, and aspirations we have as a community. Political ideology, religion, class, education, race, gender, and physical/mental capability are all parts of the experience we bring to our community, but are not the central focus of who we are and the same goes for Civic Sessions. We encourage every member of the community who participates in our Civic Session to bring all of who you are to the gathering because it matters and will enrich the conversations and connections we seek to create at these civic faith gatherings. We call them civic faith gatherings because civic engagement is an act of civic faith in those community ties that bring us together and allow us to achieve much more as a community than we could have ever hoped to achieve by ourselves. When a person chooses to become civically engaged, they are choosing to believe in the greater possibility of "us" instead of safely remaining in the comfort zone of "me.” Why isn't the Civic Session on Saturday? We wanted more folks to be able to attend in the community, and with our tourist flow, we thought Saturday would never be a good fit. Civic Saturday was created by Citizen University, a national non-profit building a culture of powerful, responsible citizenship. Dozens of Civic Saturday Fellows work with Citizen University each year to learn how to create gatherings in their hometowns. Main Street Eureka Springs director Jacqueline Wolven is a current Civic Saturday Fellow and received training at Civic Seminary in Seattle, Washington. The Session is powered by: Main Street Eureka Springs, Main Street Arkansas, and Civic University.
