Description
This is a Beginning level market basket with a wood D handle. With the exception of the rim and lashing, this basket is made entirely of flat rattan. The rim is formed with thicker material and lashed on with the same cane used in chair seats. Students can choose to make this basket without a handle for use in shelf storage. This class uses traditional over, under, plain weave from start to finish and doesn’t require any previous experience with weaving. With dimensions being 12”(At handle height) x 7” x 12” , start to finish, this class takes about 8 hours. About Rebecca: Rebecca has always been inspired by nature and all things outdoors. Her love of basketry sparked when a friend gifted her a wine basket that she had made. It took a few years to find the time but as it turned out, there was a basket shop just north of the Michigan village where she lived at the time. Weaving sessions and classes were held every week so she signed up and never looked back. That was 2005. Today, Rebecca does commission work, features at local festivals, and teaches youth and adult classes in Southwest Virginia. Her home studio is often active with gourd work and hints of wet felting or sewing as bag making is becoming a new focus. Occasionally, a chair seat gets caned, and an antique basket gets repaired. Rattan is the most used natural fiber in her art because it’s where she began and it’s readily available in a variety of sizes and colors. If it bends, Rebecca will use it. Fabrics, plastics, wire, found objects, string, or flat metals, she’ll go for it and see how it comes out. Combining traditional weaving techniques with modern materials and unexpected elements is a favorite approach in her work. Rebecca enjoys appealing to the modern eye while giving a nod to the past. When not in the studio, you can find Rebecca biking the trails, hiking, or kayaking. Reading, writing, and listening to live music are her most valued personal time activities. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We are located at 570 E.
