On July 28, 2019, after an argument about missing church and going to the beach, Figueiredo and DaPaixao fought inside their apartment on Branch Turnpike. Later, he assaulted her inside the apartment and stabbed her to death in the compound's parking lot. She was taken to Concord Hospital where she died later due to the injuries. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on Nov. 6, 2020.
Figueiredo's attorney argued for a 25 years to life sentence while prosecutors requested 45 years to life. In the end, the court imposed a longer sentence.
A GoFundMe.com effort raised more than $15,000 for the family.
