Humanware is an initiative of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District supporting the commitment to providing safe and supportive schools where our scholars can succeed and thrive.Humanware advocates for evidence-based best social emotional learning (SEL) practices. Humanware Partners serve as thought-partners, planners, professional learning providers, and coaches to CMSD Educators to facilitate the integration of SEL core competencies into schools to engage students, family, educators, and community to create safe, supportive, and successful learning environments.Humanware advocates for best practices that ensure that all human resources in a child's school, family and community function together so that students are learning in safe, supportive and successful schools.Our Keynote Speaker: Dr. Stephen Sroka is an internationally recognized speaker, trainer, author, teacher and educational consultant on health education, sex, drugs (especially opiates) and violence (bullying and suicide) proactive prevention education, school safety, brain-based learning, at-risk students and alternative-education, parenting, dropout prevention and leadership building for schools and communities. He worked early on with the WSCC concept (Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child). He is widely known as The Power of One Speaker. He is an Adjunct Assistant Professor, School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University, and President of his company, Health Education Consultants. Dr. Sroka speaks in schools (K-college) and communities around the world and often on Native American reservations. National/international conferences include AASA, ACSSW, ASCD, ATE, DARE, DEA, KDP, NASN, NASP, NASRO, NASSP, NEA, NSBA, PTA, SSWAA, STN EXPO, and US Dept. of Education. He has presented in Dubai, Guam, St. Croix, Trinidad, the Cayman Islands, Guatemala, Zurich, and London. “Self-Care with SEL: an Interactive Wellness Session”During this breakout session, we will learn to incorporate self-care and wellness into SEL and our daily lives. We will practice and learn wellness tools to add to our self-care tool kit. This will be accessible and will include breathwork, chair yoga, meditation techniques, and additional self-care and wellness practices. This session will include a few of CASEL’s core competencies: Self - Awareness, Social Awareness, and Self - Management. Rylie Boodjeh, Social Emotional Entrepreneur/ Advocate B.S. Ed & 200-hour Certified Yoga Teacher “Burnout Prevention for You and Me”: Stress Management to Cultivate a Learning Environment Where We All Can ThriveThis session will educate, engage, and empower participants to be aware of their stress levels and to intentionally incorporate activities and strategies in their day to help reduce stress for themselves and the students they serve. This is a high-energy and interactive session that will help participants beat burnout. This session will highlight Self-Awareness and Self-Management. Chanelle R. Walker, M. Ed., CEO of Professional Inspiration, The Teacher Wellness Guru “The Elephant in the Room," moving from discomfort to actionThis workshop will provide participants with tools for engaging students in difficult conversations to co-develop strategies to support student needs. We will focus on; 1. building teacher/ practitioner internal capacity & comfort when engaging in conversations with students around difficult yet pressing topics (such as bullying, suicide, incarceration, Covid-19); 2. building skills for engaging student voice, improving social and stress management skills, and incorporating it into school practices. This workshop will touch upon all of the CASEL competencies of Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Building, and Responsible Decision-Making. Presenters: Marchelle Robinson, Symphony Cummings, Elizabeth Benninger, Diane Mastnardo, Sara Jane Webster “The Black Genius Framework: An Educational Approach for the Whole Child”Culturally responsive and affirming learning environments contribute to more positive academic and socioemotional outcomes for learners, specifically Black learners. This session introduces attendees to the Black Genius Framework, a framework informed by listening sessions with more than 150 Black families articulating six elements used to develop culturally affirming instructional practices and build culturally affirming learning environments for Black learners. Attendees will learn how integrating these elements creates learning environments that drive socio-emotional and academic outcomes. This session will align the Black Genius Framework with all five competencies: Self-Awareness, Social Awareness, Self-Management, Responsible Decision Making, and Relationship Building. Arssante Malone M.A. | Associate Director of Instructional Liberation “Using Cultural Competency to Build Strong Relationships”ALL educators need to be culturally competent to build positive relationships that will help effectively reach and teach students of a different culture than their own. This workshop will review the CASEL 5 SEL core competencies with an emphasis on “relationship.” It will share information, strategies, and techniques which will help foster culturally responsive classrooms and buildings which will promote positive relationships with students and develop culturally responsive educators and students. The session will highlight Relationship building. Betty J. Maceo, M.Ed.; School Counselor, Adjunct Professor “You can’t pour from an empty cup: Effective Ways to Manage Stress and Burnout.” This hands-on, interactive workshop will allow participants to discuss stress and burnout, explore the eight dimensions of wellness, identify current stressors and coping mechanisms for dealing with stress, and create a self-care plan using tips discussed in the session. This session will highlight Self-Awareness. Angela Flowers “The Art of Mindfulness Can Promote the Power of Positive Thinking.”A highly interactive session employing divergent thinking and metacognition focused on Self-Management and techniques for Self-Care that can be utilized within the classroom and beyond.
