About the hosts: The Stanislaus Arts Council is a newly formed branch of the Central California Art League, a long-time nonprofit art gallery and education center in downtown Modesto. The arts council was formed in 2021 to help promote all forms of art throughout our county, and is now working on providing funding, support and other services to local artists and arts organizations. The website is stanislausarts.org. The gallery space exhibits rotating art shows, hosts small events and provides classes and workshops. Linda L. Knoll: https://teachingartists.com/members/class-ccaagmail-com/ My watercolor paintings began many years ago as recordings of observed places, interesting objects, and people. More recently, I have been digging deeper into the significance of detail, patterns and light. I want my audience to be intimate with my subjects. I challenge myself to be more patient as I work so I can bring subtle details to light. I love the vibrancy and transparency of watercolors, and strive to see the “inner” color of my subjects. On one hand, I choose watercolor as a medium because of its immediacy. Extraordinary feeling can be captured in just a few stokes through the beauty of line and color. On the other hand, watercolor can be built up through many layers to reveal details that retain lightness and depth. As a lifelong resident of the San Joaquin Valley, I strive to share the area’s richness with people of all ages. I have a varied background in the arts, including a BFA in graphic design from University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. From a young age, I was involved in music, theater and the visual arts. I’ve been painting and showing work in the Modesto region for over 20 years. In 2017 I was honored for my volunteer work in the visual arts community as an “Outstanding Woman of Stanislaus” by the Stanislaus County Commission on Women. After a 25-year career as a graphic designer and business owner, I earned a teaching credential in 2003. Since 2009 I’ve been teaching art to elementary students through Central California Art Association’s CLASS teaching artist program. I have also provided art classes for home-schooled and private students. I’ve written and illustrated 2 picture books, Over in Valley (2010) and Patient for Pumpkins (2014). Both books honor our local perspectives. I currently publish StArt, a bilingual arts magazine for children and families. I’m deeply concerned for the future of our planet, and in particular, the survival of our region. In previous projects, I worked to show the beauty of our environment, but also speak to the fragility of everything we hold dear. The value of water, energy, and universal kindness are areas that I like to address with paintings of our landscapes, daily life and people in the Central Valley.
