Description
An awe-inspiring epic on the Cecil B. DeMille scale for the psychedelic mindscape, Alejandro Jodorowsky’s THE HOLY MOUNTAIN is his most wild, most extravagantly imaginative vision that has captivated and challenged audiences for decades. Join Popcorn Frights’ celebration of its 50th anniversary as we journey together on a spiritual quest towards enlightenment with a one-night-only big screen experience featuring a new 4K restoration on Friday, April 21 at 10pm at the Classic Gateway Theater. Guaranteed to f*ck you up!
Alejandro Jodorowsky’s mother of all midnight movies is a surreal, sacrilegious allegory in which the writer-director stars as a mysterious figure called “The Alchemist” who, after recruiting a band of followers and subjecting them to a series of bizarre mystical rites, sets out on a journey to the titular mountain, on a mission to topple the gods who dwell there from their thrones. With the logic of dream-vision, Jodorowsky creates a phantasmagoric terrain punctuated by horrific violence and the wonderfully strange, including one memorable scene where the Spanish conquest of South America is rehashed by frogs and iguanas in full period costume.
