Being a psychotherapist is an amazing and rewarding career; it can also be litigious. Most therapists do not look forward to being investigated by their governing board or sued for malpractice. The topic alone can make any therapist nervous or cringe with dread. Therapists tend to be anchored in their ethics and invest in developing solid clinical skills to provide competent patient care and minimize the risk of being investigated and/or sued. Despite their best efforts, investigations and suits happen. This professional four-hour training meets the ethics requirement and is designed to answer common questions and provide information regarding how to reduce your liability and risk of being investigated or sued and what to do if you are contacted by a board investigator or attorney in a malpractice lawsuit. This training will cover the following:What is malpractice, and what does malpractice insurance cover and not cover?If you get sued or have a regulatory complaint filed against you, does one affect the other, and if so, how?What are the basic risk avoidance skills, confidentiality, and HIPAA/Confidentiality rules?How often are psychotherapists sued, threatened with a suit, or investigated by their regulatory boardsWhat should psychotherapists do if they receive a call from an investigator or are served with a suit?Event Details This training is open to the public and clinicians.
