Description
You are invited to the Spring Showcase for Voices of Lake County: Lake County@Work, a celebration of creative work across the Communication Arts, Humanities and Fine Arts Division at College of Lake County in Grayslake, Illinois. This special event will be presented in conjunction with CLC's Artist to Artist Community Engagement Exhibit – two amazing celebrations in one night! Lake County@Work is a year-exploration of labor and work within Lake County, Illinois through the lens of the humanities. Through a series of creative projects within CLC and the neighboring communities, we examined how “work” within our region is evolving and shifting, with the goal of creating a vision for what the future of work could be or should be. Some of the questions that were explored include: How does our work shape how we see ourselves and the world? What is the role of the humanities in the workforce and how can we support, sustain, and strengthen a creative workforce? How do we create an equitable and sustainable workplace that benefits laborers as well as the local economy? The Spring Showcase is a culmination of creative projects that were inspired by these questions and related ideas. Projects include performance-based work, digital work, storytelling, and artistic interpretation. EVENT DETAILS: Date: Friday, May 12 Community Outreach & Engagement Art Exhibit Opening & Reception: 5-7:30 p.m., Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art at CLC Featuring work from the community art workshops, art connected to the Lake County@Work project, and work-inspired classroom projects. Refreshments will be served. Lake County@Work Performance Showcase: 7:30-9 p.m., James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts Studio Theatre Featuring a live performance of a collaborative piece in conjunction with the Grayslake Performing Arts Collaborative incorporating music, dance, movement, spoken word, prose and poetry. Performance pieces were created by CLC faculty, CLC students, and community members. A screening of dance performances from the community workshops sponsored by CLC's Performing Arts Community Engagement (PACE) program will be on display in the lobby before and after the performance and during intermission. PACE creates opportunities for cultural, social, and historical expression and preservation through community engagement in the performing arts activities. Following the performance, participants from the Lake County@Work Community Writing Workshops will read nonfiction narratives, which will be recorded and turned into a CLC podcast or aired on Lancer Radio. Refreshments and snacks will be available for purchase. About Voices of Lake County: Voices of Lake County seeks to celebrate, empower, and amplify voices from the wide range of communities located in Lake County, Illinois, especially those that have been historically silenced or underrepresented in higher education. Our goal is to showcase the diverse experiences of our region and encourage those from within and outside of Lake County to better understand and appreciate our unique neighborhoods, communities, histories, and cultures. Every year Voices of Lake County focuses on a different theme. In 2021-2022, the theme was The Postcards Project. This year's theme is Lake County@Work. Learn more about Voices of Lake County: https://www.voicesoflakecounty.com/ About the Artist-to-Artist Community Engagement Exhibit: Community Art and Engagement workshops are part of an arts-integrated community outreach program through the Communication Arts, Humanities and Fine Arts Division. Each year, this will include four youth workshops, four adult workshops, and a culminating art exhibit. Student workers serve as CLC Student Community Art Assistants and mentors to youth attending the workshops. Free art kits and informational inserts encourage attendees to keep creating, serve as a “Certificate of Completion,” and continue the connection to CLC. The Spring Showcase will showcase many of the amazing art that was created in these workshops.
