About the Sistahs at the Well Documentary on Black Women's Health EquityBlack women carry the highest rate of chronic disease as compared to other women. These statistics are often grounded in discussions that showcase habits of disease versus habits of health. However, despite the challenges Black women face in their healthcare, the promise of healing continues to prevail. The documentary was created out of the urgency to celebrate the successful healing journeys of Black women and to act as a vision of possibility in overcoming conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, breast cancer, hypertension, and heart disease. The legacy of chronic disease in the Black community is experiencing a substantial shift as more women are disrupting the narratives attached to the wellness of Black women. The stories we often hear, plagued with negative statistics, are being replaced with stories of hope and transformation as Black women take back the reins of their health. The documentary centers on the journey of two Black women who have reversed symptoms of chronic disease. Highlighting the highs and lows of their journeys, the film seeks to foster a healthy engagement between women and their bodies. The goal is to inspire and connect women to build a community working to change the narratives behind external stigmas, inequities in healthcare practices, and personal habits that play a role in the wellness of Black women. Exploring the historical, psychological, medical, and societal determinants attached to how Black women engage in their health, the feature includes vulnerable conversations with women and invites the expertise of notable health and wellness practitioners. Speakers include Dr. Neal Bernard, founding president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, Urologist Dr. Terry Mason, Dr. Cardiologist Kim Williams, and Psychologist Dr. Alduan Tarrt, Ph.D. Other powerful voices consist of 71-year-old vegan chef, fitness expert, motivational speaker Dr. Chef Babbett, and the founders of the 40+ Double Dutch Club, which promotes reliving the healthy outdoor activities that most Black women enjoyed their youth. An extension of Sistahs At The Well and the Sistah Soul Nutrition program, the film also showcases the journey of 100 Black women who trek to Sint Maarten for the Girlfriend Getaway, Sistahs At the Well's Annual Retreat. The five-day celebration of wellness positions women to engage in fitness activities, healthy cooking demonstrations, and conversations on emotional, physical, and nutritional wellness. The wellness of Black women leans on the narratives we choose to define and live by. The documentary showcases a way forward for those who can heal when surrounded by trusted voices in safe spaces.
