Moderated by NBC 5’s Christian Farr, a panel of black men with relevant educational backgrounds and lived experiences will talk openly about black men’s mental health – a topic that many consider taboo. Black men often hold common misconceptions: that depression is normal, that talking about feelings is a sign of weakness, or that seeking help is sharing vulnerabilities with a stranger. However, health care disparities, racism, and lack of access to the right kinds of resources means that black men are 20% more likely to have serious psychological distress than their white counterparts. Our panelists, including Dr. Obari Cartman, Dr. Bonnie Pete Thomas, Marvin Lindsey, MSW, and Aaron Mallory, LCSW, will help dispel these myths and demystify the stigma associated with mental health. Join us for this important discussion. This forum will demystify the stigma associated with mental health while increasing awareness. This engaging discussion is presented by the Chicago (IL) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, partnered with 100 Black Men of Chicago, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated-Zi Lambda Chapter , and UIC-Jane Addams School of Social Work.
