Description

Nueva Math Circle is a popular community event that celebrates math at its most engaging, enriching, and fun. Our events draw students from across the Bay Area at all grade levels (PreK to Grade 12) who come to enjoy intriguing mathematical activities, games, and demonstrations led by distinguished mathematicians and leading educators. Join us on Saturday, April 29!We are thrilled to bring you a special 2-hour Artificial Intelligence Workshop on Large Language Models (LLMs) for Grade 7-12 students hosted by Andrew Dai and Yanqi Zhou (engineers at Google Brain). Featured presenters also include David Klein (Director of San Francisco Math Circle) and Stephanie Englehaupt (former Nueva Lower School Math Specialist), Chess Challenge & Games in the Cafe, and more! If you think you'll be attending, we strongly recommend you purchase your tickets right away. Sessions fill up quickly and have sold out within 24 hours in the past. We hope you'll join us, and please help spread the word by forwarding this page to anyone you know who may be interested in an enriching and fun-filled afternoon of math! SPECIAL 2-HOUR AI WORKSHOP on Large Language Models for Gr. 7-12 studentsIt seems there's no hotter topic right now than Artificial Intelligence: specifically Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, Google Bard, etc. Are you interested in getting a hands-on look at how they actually work? Consider this 2-hour workshop to be "LLM 101" and it's not to be missed. Andrew Dai and Yanqi Zhou, engineers at Google Brain, will be your guides. After an introductory overview to LLMs & transformers, students will have the opportunity to take an off-the-shelf LLM model and observe its baseline performance on a specific case, before proceeding to fine-tune the model in real-time using additional specialized training data. They will then observe the performance of the fine-tuned model. Students will use a web coding environment called Google Colab along with access to Google Cloud TPU to accelerate fine-tuning training. Code will be shared for students to continue hacking after the session. This special 2-hour workshop is for Gr. 7-12 students. Students should bring a laptop if they have one, but laptops will also be available to borrow for use during the workshop. Capacity is limited due to space constraints, so please reserve your tickets now! Gr. 3-6 sessions: David Klein, Director of San Francisco Math CircleLeading our Math Circle sessions for Grade 3-6 students is David Klein, who is the Director of San Francisco Math Circle at SF State University. SF Math Circle hosts a variety of programs and summer camps all about promoting & developing mathematical thinking. Each session is limited to 35 students. PreK - Gr. 2 sessions: Stephanie Englehaupt, former Nueva Lower School Math SpecialistWe're overjoyed to have Stephanie Englehaupt back at Nueva Math Circle! Historically one of our most popular presenters for PK-Gr. 2 students, she was formerly the Lower School Math Specialist and teacher at The Nueva School for over 16 years. She currently serves as an educational consultant and is also the founder of Applied Math Camps. Her session will be all about data. Students will explore collecting, representing, questioning and interpreting data through a series of engaging, hands-on activities. Each session is limited to 35 students. Chess Challenge & Games in the CafeFor this Math Circle, we've added an exciting new twist to our popular Games & Puzzles in the Cafe: Chess Challenge. Lora Saarnio and her Nueva students will take on all comers in a simultaneous chess challenge involving up to 18 boards! Lora is a Nueva Math Teacher and long-time faculty organizer for Nueva Math Circle. She was previously ranked among the top 50 US women players. We will also have plenty of chess boards for students to play amongst themselves as well as a collection of other fun & highly-recommended educational board games for all ages from the Nueva Math Lab. Please Arrive Early: Doors Open at 12:30pmDoors will open at 12:30pm for lunch and check-in before sessions begin at 1:00pm. In order to be respectful to our presenters and other students, we ask that you plan to arrive early in order to have enough time to check-in and get to your first session before it starts. There will be plenty of outdoor tables with seating for those who would like to have lunch on-campus before the event. Pizza and snacks will be available for purchase at the event as usual. Nueva Math Circle has gone cashless, and we accept credit / debit / Apple Pay / Google Pay. Important Event DetailsThis is a community-wide event that is open to the public. Parking is available in the school garage and adjacent overflow lot. Even better, the Hillsdale Caltrain station is now just across the street from campus! Please be advised that this is *not* a drop-off event. Parents are invited to join their child(ren) in the LS sessions (required for PK-2, at parents' discretion for Gr 3-4). Parents generally do not need their own ticket if you are just planning to accompany your students to the event. We strongly recommend registering ASAP as seats are limited and some sessions fill up quickly.
