They combine mash-ups and dance music jams with live drums to create an experience that sounds like recess at 100 mph. Kristine Leschper is an interdisciplinary artist working in sound, text, image, and performance. Her work positions itself around the spectacle of the human condition, deeply interested in questions of meaning-making, womanhood, socio-ecological systems, and the wielding of power. Her personal philosophies around music-making approach the sonic landscape as an object with shape, dimension and weight. She has presented over 250 live performances across the US, UK, and Europe. Out of chaos, the universe emerged, and from chaos a person can emerge, too. Kristine Leschper isn’t being hyperbolic when she describes a sensation of “being born” when a culmination of events, both personal and global, catalyzed in her “an understanding of how to relinquish control in a big way, and from that, a new sense of connectedness, transition, and impermanence.” She explains her desire to cultivate work in the spirit of the New World Poets, where in the words of June Jordan there exists “a reverence for the material world that begins with a reverence for human life, an intellectual trust in sensuality as a means of knowledge and of unity.” Leschper’s The Opening, Or Closing Of A Door (ANTI/Epitaph) is a paean to the sensory world. It’s the first Leschper has released under her given name, having retired the moniker Mothers after eight years of performing and releasing music under it. Though both projects are guided by Leschper’s idiosyncratic approach to songwriting, they couldn’t sound more different. While Mothers drew inspiration from the stark, skeletal sounds of post-punk and contemporary folk, Leschper’s new work is practically baroque, integrating an array of synthesizers, strings, woodwinds, and over a dozen percussive instruments. Franco Scherer - Born and raised in Rosario, Argentina, Franco was strongly influenced by local artists at an early age. He soon learned to play the electric guitar and in 2000, he became part of the band Fruta Deliciosa, a mixture of rock, punk, reggae, funk and disco. Since its creation, the band has released 5 studio albums and has performed live in numerous important shows, headlining and opening for national and international bands. After attending the international electronic music festival SONAR in Barcelona in 2015, Franco started developing an interest in synthesizers. He began to delve into electronic genres and music production and in 2018, he produced and released his first solo album of experimental electronic music, "Sintético". His most recent album “Sueño Warp” came out in 2022. In this album, Franco experiments samplings, analog synthesizers, and recorded speeches. He has been living in Athens since 2021. Night Palace - Night Palace's debut album Diving Rings is a shocking alchemy: aching nostalgia meets frothy anticipation of what’s beyond the garden wall. Tantalizing pop melodies take wing with lush instrumentation and glimmers of psychedelia, weaving reedy arrangements for songwriter Avery Draut’s intimate vocals to light upon. It’s hard to believe the album is not a soundtrack to another world– you find yourself picturing it: a moonlit-gilded diorama of Draut’s dreams and memories. Out last April on Park the Van Records, the debut garnered a mention on NPR’s All Songs Considered Podcast, and was highlighted on AllMusic’s Best of 2022 list. Nicholas Mallis - Over the past seven years, Nicholas Mallis’ brand of weirdo pop and absurdist, over the top performances have been garnering him praise in Athens, Georgia and beyond. He has shared bills with indie pop greats like Dan Deacon and Kishi Bashi and even played as a side man in the solo efforts of Athens legends Cindi Wilson and Fred Schneider (The B-52’s). In 2019, Nicholas released Artificial Irrelevance, a collection of glam pop songs that Flagpole Magazine referred to as “timeless.” After spending a year touring AI, Nicholas quickly turned out another album (The Final Station) and was gearing up to tour the east coast again before COVID-19 hit in 2020. In Glide Magazine’s review, they state that Nicholas’ music “feels like it came from the late 70s or early 80s during the creative, left-of-the-dial burst in alternative music while also sounding fresh and original.” In late March, Nicholas will be releasing his latest effort, ‘Product Placement’ via Second-Day Records, a new imprint of Amazon Inc. With this album, he takes a cheeky spin on modern commercialism, making the songs sound like ads for common products and services. He even has a song that he claims the state of Florida commissioned him to write to help boost tourism. “I’m not sure where this whole music thing is going to lead,” says Mallis, “but I suggest you upgrade to an Amazon Prime account now.” The Howdies - The Howdies came together while swapping songs and passing bottles around an open fire. They like everything from Hank and Lefty to Waylon and Willie. They play both kinds of music, Country & Western. Featuring members of the Athens Cowboy Choir, the Darnell Boys, the Hibbs Family Band and Tyler Key and the Strangers. Fabulous Bird - Fabulous Bird Catchy, lo-fi indie rock with the character of old guitars and drums collecting dust in a garage for years Normaltown Sound Machine - Quintet delivers posh electro at the highest dynamic range for peak usefulness Los Cantares - Los Cantares is a desert rock band born in Athens Ga and conceived in the southern Californian desert. Original songs about kindness, freedom and weed. Featuring Jim Wilson, Jason Trajan, Richard Mikulka & Adam Hebert. Nina Ryserfrom Palberta) is a Philadelphia-based musician and composer. Her self-titled experimental pop project consists of lush synth compositions, vocals and electronics. Nina’s background is in contemporary classical composition, working with a variety of ensembles including the American Symphony Orchestra. Nina has played in many bands, including Palberta – a DIY art-punk/pop trio of 10 years that has released 8 full-length records reviewed by the New York Times, NPR Music, Rolling Stone, and Pitchfork; they have toured prolifically, and opened for Bikini Kill and Deerhoof. Nina is currently working on her seventh full-length solo album, as well as a synth-based film score for her friend's feature length sci-fi film, to be released in 2023. The Welfare Liners - Original bluegrass with brother harmonies in a classic style. The Lanes - The Lanes started when I took a gig offer scheduled for April 29, 2011 at Little Kings. I had no band and no songs. I got my brother Matt Lane to play drums, Chuck Bradburn to play bass, and Richard Mikulka to play guitar. I wrote 6 songs (each based on a different band’s style that I liked) and we somehow pulled off the gig. Now here we are, 12 years later. Hog-Eyed ManHog-eyed Man takes listeners on a soulful journey, rooted in community and tradition, stretching back into the forgotten past while simultaneously reaching forward to oldtime music’s alternate future. Athens-based fiddler Jason Cade and multi-instrumentalist Rob McMaken are "blasting apart the staid world of old-time fiddling and looking for something new in the roots of the music," (Devon Leger, The Bluegrass Situation). As Hog-eyed Man, they eschew the smoothed-over repertoire and flashy approach of the modern oldtime and bluegrass canons, taking inspiration instead from the last guardians of 19th century fiddle traditions from the Southern Appalachians. Murder The Mood - Murder The Mood is an alt rock band based in Athens and formed in 2013. They bring a high energy show to the stage with riff based grooves and punchy vocals. Freeman Leverett - Exuberant indie pop with ethereally hypnotic hooks and cosmopolitan influences Cree Mo - Chris Moore, also known as Cree Mo, has been a part of the Athens music scene since 1997. His music is written with candid lyrics and powered by strong vocals. In addition to performances of his own music, Cree Mo has also sang with a Led Zeppelin cover band called The Moby Dicks and an AC/DC band called Powerload. Ballard Lesemann - I’ll be on loan from my new position as drummer with the Shut Ups, playing electric guitar and singing in a duo setting with support from Peter Alvanos (Elf Power, Fabulous Bird) on the drums and backing vocals. We’ll bounce through a set of crazy-lazy jangle-mangle rock tunes, most of which are originals, some of which are choice covers of choice classics. We’ll also dedicate a pop rendition of the old Navy fight song “Anchors Aweigh” to the ol’ Naval Supply Corps School (at Prince and Oglethorpe avenues).
