Denise Y. Giles, a member of the Pi Beta chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., dedicated her energy and life to serving others. She was employed with the Association of Retarded Citizens where she worked tirelessly with the disabled. Denise graduated from the University of Rochester in May of 1989. On Wednesday, November 29, 1989, our beloved sister's life was taken. To honor her, the Denise Y. Giles Scholarship was created.
The Denise Y. Giles scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate student attending the University of Rochester, SUNY Brockport, or the Rochester Institute of Technology. It is a general scholarship that is awarded to an undergraduate student, based upon judgment of a written essay on a pre-selected current event prompt. Three to four of these applicants are then chosen to participate in the oratorical portion of the contest at the Scholarship Ball. Since 1992, the Pi Beta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Xi Epsilon Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fratermity, Inc. has awarded more than $10,000 to deserving students.
