Description

Thank you to the State of Ohio - OFCC - local foundations, Society board/staff/volunteers and individual donors within the community for contributing to restore and revitalize the John Brown House and property over the last ten years. Your efforts have made the home of the infamous abolitionist "Warm, Safe and Dry" and now "Accessible to All." On May 9th, John Brown's 223rd birthday, we will be hosting a re-opening celebration with a free open house for all between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Guests are then invited to attend an historical magical presentation by Rory Rennick at The City of Joy Life Enrichment Center starting at 6:30 p.m. This program features the life and work of Henry "Box" Brown, a slave who had shipped himself to freedom and was a contemporary of our John Brown. John Brown was hanged on December 2, 1859, after being convicted of treason when he raided the federal arsenal at Harpers in an effort to end slavery in the United States. Upon John Brown's capture, Henry Brown left the United States for Europe. There, he started a new life as a magician. After his death, a locket of John Brown's hair was sent to the family of Henry "Box" Brown. Learn more about these two individuals who shaped history and see our locket of John Brown hair on special display. An unveiling of the John Brown House donor wall, designed and made by local artist John Communale, will occur during the open house. Contributions are still be accepted for our work in continuing John Brown's Legacy of Freedom. Names will be updated on the wall annually.
