Radiographs are an essential part of diagnosis, treatment planning and an excellent patient educational tool. Without them, a proper (and legal) diagnosis is not possible. How, as dental professionals, do we manage hypersensitive gaggers during dental radiographs? The solution lies in understanding what triggers the physiologic gag response, identifying mechanisms that contribute to it, and managing the patient through a successful radiographic exposure experience.
Learning objectives:
Participants will be able to identify the psychogenic and tactile mechanisms that initiate the gag reflex
Participants will be able to list physiologic and psychological reasons why the gag response is elicited in certain patients
Participants will be able to list patient management techniques in the event of gag response during radiograph exposure
Participants will be more confident in guiding the patient towards a successful radiograph experience
