Press release from the City of Millbrae: January 11, 2021 This Week: Construction activities on U.S. 101 from Whipple Avenue (in Redwood City) to I-380 (in South San Francisco) will include continued work near the removed sound wall along Bayshore Boulevard (from 2nd Avenue to Dore Avenue) within the City of San Mateo; nighttime pile driving in the City of San Carlos; and daytime retaining wall work in the City of San Mateo. Additional work will include installing stormwater drainage systems, overhead signs, and guardrail; grading; paving; roadway excavation; reconstructing stormwater drainage systems; concrete demolition; erosion control work; and other related construction activities. Most of the work will occur on the freeway lanes, shoulders, and ramps, while sound wall work will occur on city streets adjacent to U.S. 101. More information is provided below. Extended Weekend Ramp Closures January 10th – 11th Beginning Sunday, January 10th, extended weekend ramp closures may occur at ramps in/near the cities of San Carlos, Belmont, Foster City and San Mateo in order to facilitate drainage system construction. Closures are scheduled to begin after 3:00 AM on Sunday morning and end by 6:00 AM on Monday morning. Detour signs will be posted and changeable message signs will indicate exact closure times and locations. Extended weekend ramp closures may occur at the following locations: Eastbound Hillsdale Boulevard, Northbound U.S. 101 On-Ramp Eastbound 3rd/4th Avenue, Northbound U.S. 101 On-Ramp Poplar Avenue, Southbound U.S. 101 On-Ramp Harbor Boulevard, Southbound U.S. 101 On-Ramp Daytime Retaining Wall Work in the City of San Mateo Retaining wall work in the City of San Mateo is scheduled to begin the week of January 10th. Construction crews will install the foundation of a retaining wall using a hydraulic hammer (also known as pile driving) on Southbound U.S. 101, south of the on-ramp from East Hillsdale Boulevard. This work is scheduled to take place from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM over 5 non-consecutive working days, beginning on Wednesday, January 13th. It is anticipated to be completed the week of January 17th. Noise and vibration from the intermittent use of a hydraulic hammer as well as other common construction-related sounds such as backup alarms should be anticipated. In addition, the closure of Eastbound East Hillsdale Boulevard to Southbound U.S. 101 On-Ramp and Westbound East Hillsdale Boulevard to Southbound U.S. 101 On-Ramp will be required for safety reasons. Nighttime Pile Driving Work in the City of San Carlos Nighttime pile driving in the City of San Carlos is scheduled to take place the week of January 10th. Construction crews will be pile driving on Northbound U.S. 101, adjacent to the on-ramp from Westbound Holly Street, in the City of San Carlos. This work will support the construction of a concrete barrier containing a ramp metering pole, that will help manage the flow of traffic from the Westbound Holly Street On-Ramp. Travelers may see construction crews between the hours of 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM. Pile driving is anticipated to be completed the week of January 10th. Sound Wall Work: Construction crews working on the sound wall on Bayshore Boulevard, from 2nd Avenue to Dore Avenue in the City of San Mateo, continue to implement periodic traffic control. Traffic control may occur from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Watch for detour signs. After 5:00 PM, the road will be restored to two-way traffic. Nighttime Freeway Lane Closures: Nightly freeway lane closures may occur on northbound and southbound U.S. 101 from 7:00 PM to 6:30 AM, Sunday night to Friday morning. Due to low traffic volumes, project-related traffic delays are anticipated to be minimal. Caltrans will continue to monitor the flow of traffic and make adjustments, as necessary. Freeway Ramp Closures: Temporary ramp closures may occur during the day or night. Ramp closures could occur in both the northbound and southbound directions of the freeway. However, consecutive interchanges for northbound and southbound ramps will not be closed at the same time. Daytime ramp closures: Short-term daytime ramp closures are possible the weeks of January 10th (between Monday afternoon and Friday Evening) in the City of San Mateo at the following locations, to support daytime retaining wall work. Changeable message signs near the ramps will have exact closure times and locations. Upcoming Construction (North of Whipple Avenue): Construction activities in the coming weeks on U.S. 101 from Whipple Avenue to I-380 (in South San Francisco) will include: continued work on the removed sound wall in the City of San Mateo; daytime retaining wall work in the City of San Mateo; and nighttime pile driving in/near the cities of Belmont and San Carlos. Additional work will include installing guardrail, weigh-in-motion systems for measuring axle and vehicle weights, stormwater drainage systems, and permanent concrete barrier; roadway excavation; shoulder excavation; grading; paving; removing and replacing overhead sign panels; and removing guardrail. Nighttime Pile Driving Work in/near the Cities of Belmont and San Carlos: Beginning the week of January 17th, construction crews will be pile driving adjacent to the Harbor Boulevard, Southbound 101 On-Ramp in/near the cities of Belmont and San Carlos.
