SD DeafBlind Program Summer InstituteActive Learning for Students with Complex Access NeedsJune 8 & 9, 2023 University Center Rapid City4300 Cheyenne Blvd.Rapid City, SD 8:30- 4:30 MDTLunch will be provided both days.You will go home with a new tool.Keys will provide an opportunity to learn more about Active Learning, AL, for students with multiple disabilities, including those who are DeafBlind. The driving principles behind AL will be discussed, how it complements any curriculum, ways to develop standards-based IEP goals, and complete an AL planning sheet. On day two, access technology will be created in a make-and-take session based on the planning sheet. Join us, whether you are new to AL or a seasoned practitioner, to talk about how AL addresses the unique education needs of students of any age who are developmentally functioning. Learning Objectives: • Gain an introductory understanding of the AL approach • Learn how AL integrates with instruction • Begin planning for your student or child using AL • Make-and-take assistive technology supporting AL Hillary Keys is a Deafblind Education Consultant for the Texas DeafBlind Project. She has over thirty years of experience in education as a classroom teacher, an itinerant TVI/TDB, and DeafBlind Specialist at a regional and statewide level for the last nineteen years. She is passionate about finding the best ways for children to learn and experience joy, especially those with complex needs. While she has diverse interests, Active Learning approach and early childhood development and learning are areas of strength. Keys is the past chair for AERBVI’s Multiple Disabilities and DeafBlindness Division and received the Julia L. Young award from TAER for her work related to Active Learning. At this stage in her career, sharing her knowledge and experience with colleagues and families might be the favorite part of her career.The contents of this flyer were developed under a grant from the Department of Education H326T180053.
