Oakland Township Historical Society and Rochester-Avon Historical Society invite you to join us on our annual joint field trip! Let's all meet at Trini & Carmen's, 1715 N Telegraph, Waterford, for lunch on your own at 11:30 am, then on to Oak Hill Cemetery for a 1:30 pm tour with Mike McGuiness (suggested donation $5 or $10, your choice). Oak Hill was founded in 1822 and is one of the oldest continuously operated cemeteries in Michigan. It has become the resting place of Generals, a Medal of Honor winner, a Governor and Pioneers of the City of Pontiac and the surrounding area. The grounds contain historic grave sites and structures, and include interesting statues such as loyal bloodhound Gipsy, who sits watching where his master lies, a cannon that stands aimed near General Richardson's monument, and Governor Wisner's guardian angel still stands on guard. Mike McGuiness is the Executive Director of the Oakland County Pioneer and Historical Society and is a popular researcher and public speaker on many Pontiac history topics, and collaborated with the Pontiac Central Class of 1968 to successfully restore the Chief Pontiac statue that proudly stood in Pontiac Central for decades.
