More about Geshe Lobsang : From age 7, Geshe-la studied the fundamentals of Tibetan language until attending the Dharma Institute of the famous Drepung Tashi Gomang Monastery in Mungod, South India where he advanced to the study of the Vinaya (Buddhist ethics and monastic discipline) and graduated. In 1988, in the presence of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, he received the vows of a monk. Six years later, in 1994, after extensive study he passed with excellence, the comprehensive exams of the Gelug tradition and began additional studies in the classic Mahayana texts, including the five most famous volumes of Lord Buddha’s teachings. At the same time, he taught and lectured younger students on these very topics. And, in 2000, he was awarded the degree of Geshe Lharampa – the equivalent of a Ph.D. at the renowned monastic center of Ganden in South India. He then took a one-year course at the Upper Tantric College where he studied the four classes of Vajrayana Tantras: in particular the Guhyasamaja, Chakrasamvara, and the Wrathful form of Manjushri, among others. He received empowerment, oral transmission, and practice explanation on the Development and Completion Stages of the Vajrayana. During that same year, he assumed the role of Geshe and Instructor. In 2009, at the Guyuto Tantric College he received instruction on the practice and commitments for the Vajrayana Guhyasamaja Tantra. For over forty years he has been a continuous student of his holiness the Dalai Lama. Geshe Lopsang Tseten has been instrumental in administration and raising funds for various projects in India. He travels extensively and continues to teach Buddhist principles of loving kindness, compassion, and ethical behavior (the noble activities of a Bodhisattva) to students and lay people. His goals are always to introduce students and the public to the profound teachings that best express the noble Buddhist path of love and compassion. In 2016, Geshe Lopsang Tseten created the Deep Roots Himalayan Foundation, a not-for-profit in the United States, for the purpose of providing funding for scholarships, infrastructure, and operations at a girl’s school at Dorje Dzong at the Tsun Monastery in Zanskar, India. In 2019, he established the Summer Philosophical Symposium and Culture Welfare Society, also in Zanskar. He serves as Chairman for both organizations. In 2020, Geshe-la founded the Zanskar Women’s Educational Center to offer instruction on Buddhist philosophy and teachings, together with a modern educational curriculum. He currently holds the position of Director. Geshe’s current efforts promote the teachings of the masters of Nalanda University of ancient India. The intention is to benefit the general public, lay practitioners, and ordained Sangha of Zanskar by providing education in traditional Buddhist philosophy, teachings and practice, along with modern science.
