About Isis BrantleyIsis Brantley is bringing her Osun Festival & River Ceremony to Houston for the second time! Over the past ten years she has produced this event annually in Dallas, her hometown. Known internationally as a matriarch of the natural hair industry, she is a braider to stars such as her friend Erykah Badu, author, guest speaker, social entrepreneur, and mother to five very successful children. In 1997 Isis was arrested and jailed in Dallas for braiding without a “permission slip” from the State. She fought the state for 20 years, winning her federal lawsuit against Texas in 2015, which soon led to a change in the law, removing hair braiding from all licensing requirements. Her win made a way for hundreds of Black women and men to start their own businesses. Isis started her braiding business, Naturally Isis, in 1980, and has been continuously in business since. During her legal battle she also founded the Institute of Ancestral Braiding (IOAB), the only school offering certifications. IOAB has trained hundreds of young women in the ancestral art of braiding, giving them the opportunity to become entrepreneurs. Today she travels the nation advocating for natural hair rights and sharing ancestral wisdom.
