LIVERMORE, CA — Livermore residents have long dealt with an ongoing catalytic converter theft problem in their community. On Sunday, police arrested two suspects in connection to yet another attempt to steal the high-valued car parts.
Last week, a pair of suspects were reportedly scared off when a Livermore resident noticed them hanging around their neighbor's car in the early morning. The resident was able to snap a photo of the suspects as they fled on foot, officials from the Livermore Police Department wrote in a Facebook post.
"Well the same pair of thieves decided to return to Livermore early this morning," police wrote. "Luckily LPD's nightwatch was waiting for them. Officers quickly recognized the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop."
During a search of the vehicle, officers located tools associated with catalytic converter thefts, along with two stolen catalytic converters. The two suspects were taken into custody early Sunday morning.
"We did it again Livermore, the community and law enforcement working together," police wrote.
Catalytic converters are a high-value item that can be stolen in less than five minutes and traded for cash at a chop shop or metal recycler.
