"A Pleasant Place for Sunday Afternoon: Celebrating 100 Years of Drake and Shevlin Parks
Shevlin and Drake parks hold special places in the hearts of area residents. Deschutes County Historical Society Board Member Mike Berry will share the history and creation of both Drake and Shevlin parks in 1920, and how visionary residents planned for creating and nurturing open community spaces in and around the city of Bend.
Mike Berry is a history enthusiast, a professional land surveyor and a 1977 graduate of the Forest Technology program at Central Oregon Community College. The majority of his 46 year surveying career has been in Central Oregon where he often finds himself drawn deeper into the backstory of the men and women who walked these same lands generations ago. He is a volunteer for the Deschutes County Historical Society, researching and writing articles for the Society's newsletter about local people, places, and events.
