Did you know?
- The length of the Cathedral is two football fields and a football. It is the largest
Gothic cathedral in the world.
- The Statue of Liberty would fit under the crossing in the nave.
- The oldest part of the Cathedral, the apse, consists of the seven "chapels of the
tongues" each with its own architectural style and each dedicated to welcoming
immigrant groups coming here at the turn of the century and into the 20th
century.
- The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine, the mother church of the
Episcopal Diocese of New York and the Seat of its Bishop, is chartered as a
house of prayer for all people and a unifying center of intellectual light and
leadership. It serves the many diverse people of our Diocese, City, Nation and
World through an array of liturgical, cultural and civic events; pastoral,
educational and community outreach activities;
people from many faiths and communities worship together in services held more than
30 times a week; the soup kitchen serves roughly 25,000 meals annually.
